So, today I followed a few Haenyeo. Haenyeo means “women of the sea” in Korean. It’s the name given to the female free divers from Jeju Island who have been diving its shores for centuries. They capture seaweed, shellfish, or little octopus. According to Mr. Kim, who I met in the beach today, Haenyeo women started working in the sea after a tax was imposed on male income. According to my Lonely Planet, they work as cooperatives and share their catch. All I saw is they dive without any breathing equipment and they get a bit grumpy if they see you snapping pics… Here’s what I could get!
